A mother has been taken into custody after her two young children, aged 9 and 2, tragically died from suspected hypothermia. The family had spent the night in a van parked inside the Hollywood Casino Hotel at Greektown in Detroit.

Tatiana Williams, the mother, may be charged for her involvement in the incident. This incident has not only shocked the community but has also shed light on the difficult situations faced by families who are experiencing homelessness.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison revealed that the family had been residing in their vehicle for two to three months, often finding refuge in different casinos for shelter.

On Monday, February 10, 2025, at around 1 a.m., the family found themselves parked on the ninth floor of the casino’s garage. Unfortunately, the van came to a halt, possibly due to mechanical failure or running out of fuel, leaving the family without any heat as the freezing temperatures set in.

On Monday, tragedy struck when the mother discovered her 9-year-old child was unresponsive. Alarmed, she reached out to a friend for assistance who quickly transported the child to a nearby children’s hospital. As the family checked on the other children, they were devastated to find that their 2-year-old was also unresponsive.

The grandmother immediately dialed 911 for help, while the friend rushed the toddler to the hospital. Tragically, both children were pronounced dead upon their arrival. Authorities suspect that hypothermia is the probable cause of death, although the final determination will be made by the medical examiner.

The hospital notified the police at 12:47 p.m. on Monday regarding the incident. The children who survived, ranging in age from 2 to 13, were promptly brought to the hospital for assessment and are currently under the care of their relatives.

After conducting an investigation, the authorities have arrested the mother and anticipate that she will be charged in connection with the deaths of the children. Chief Bettison underscored the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing, “This is a grave matter.”

“This is a heartbreaking case that underscores the severe risks faced by families living in vehicles, especially during the winter months. While we must hold individuals accountable, we also need to address the systemic issues that lead to such tragedies.”

The incident has caused a significant amount of anger and sadness, prompting numerous individuals to demand greater assistance and resources for families experiencing homelessness.

Advocates are urging local officials to take immediate action in order to expand shelter access and provide additional assistance to those in need. This is to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

The heartbreaking loss of these two young children serves as a powerful reminder of the pressing need to tackle homelessness and housing insecurity in Detroit and other areas.
