A quick-thinking employee at the Macy’s store in Downtown Brooklyn foiled a burglary attempt, preventing the thief from making off with $1.5 million worth of jewelry, according to the police.
The suspect can be seen in surveillance footage from the NYPD inside the store located at 422 Fulton St. during the attempted robbery on Monday night.
The suspect entered the store earlier in the day and patiently waited for it to close, as per the police.
According to the police, he tried to escape by concealing the expensive jewelry in a suitcase.
As he made his way towards the exit, a store employee approached him, causing him to abandon the suitcase and leave without taking anything.
Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
The Macy’s store on Fulton Street is scheduled to close in the coming months as part of the retailer’s “Bold New Chapter” strategy. This strategy aims to close 150 underperforming stores and shift the focus towards the best-performing ones.
