CHESTER – Kayla Bertolami’s family is looking to keep the memory of their daughter alive through a scholarship fund in her name.
Kayla, 21, a 2011 Pinkerton Academy honor graduate and senior at Saint Anselm College, died unexpectedly last year on July 29 of a pulmonary embolism.
“We, as a family, could not believe Kayla’s death was the end. She was so full of life, helped so many people and just achieved so much in her short life – we just had to find a way to keep her legacy alive, so we created the scholarship through the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation,” said Kayla’s mom, Karen Bertolami.
Kayla was set to graduate early from Saint Anselm because of her high grades; she held down three jobs while attending full time and was named to the Dean’s List.
The Bertolami family is looking for community support in creating the scholarship. If they can raise $25,000 by May 30, they can establish the scholarship that will help students annually in perpetuity. The family hopes to grow the memorial fund in coming years to expand the number of students they can help send through school.
The Bertolamis are holding a couple of upcoming events to further that work.
On Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Chester, they’re holding a Snowflake Social, featuring characters from the movie “Frozen, as well as crafts and light refreshments. The cost is $20 per person.
They’re also holding an event for adults at Castleton in Windham. On March 13 from 7 until 11:30 p.m. they’re offering a full chicken cordon bleu dinner, dessert, raffles, silent auction items, dancing, and cash bar. The event is cash only, including drinks, raffle and silent auction items.
The cost for the Castleton event is $75 per person. Tickets must be purchased no later than Feb. 28. They can be purchased online at kaylabertolami.eventbrite.com or by calling Karen at 490-3518.
