CHESTER – The board of selectmen has agreed to a change in the way warrant articles are handled in town, forcing all departments to bring those articles directly to the selectmen’s office, where they would then be disseminated into the proper channels.
Selectman chair Steph Landau asked the board to make the change, saying that in the past there has been confusion over where the articles are to go, lack of uniformity in making sure all board members review them and a tendency for a rush before the town meeting deadline to get all of the warrant article ducks in a row.
There is also often consternation during budget season by members of the budget committee, who say they too often get the warrant articles late in the game and don’t have the needed time to review them appropriately.
Landau wants all articles to go to the selectmen’s office, and then uniformly be sent to finance and to legal counsel, first to make sure the numbers look good and for necessary calculations and the second to make sure the language is correct.
“It shouldn’t cause any problems. It’s just centralizing everything,” said Landau.
The rest of the board in attendance, Jack Cannon, Joe Hagan and Rich LeBlanc, agreed. Joe Castricone was not in attendance at the Thursday, Oct. 2 meeting.
