The Pinkerton Academy boys’ outdoor track and field squad flexed its muscles at yet another competition last week, winning the team title handily at the Thursday, May 15 Merrimack High School Invitational by posting 19 point-scoring performances.
And the Pinkerton Lady Astros wound up ninth overall out of 14 competing squads at that event.
The academy guys notched a team score of 103 points to easily outdistance the runner-up and host Merrimack High Tomahawks (82) and the other 13 competing teams as well.
The Astros collected only two event wins, thanks to the work of multi-event stalwart Isaiah Backels in the pole vault (12 feet, 6 inches) and the 4×400 relay team (3 minutes, 26.60 seconds). But they exhibited their tremendous depth by bagging those 19, top-six finishes for points.
Kayla Watson snared the Lady Astros’ lone first place finish in the discus (114’8”), but other scoring efforts were put forth by Brianna Warnick and Nora Robichaud.
The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy girls – who are enjoying an absolutely exceptional 2014 outdoor campaign - won the ladies’ title easily by tallying 137 big points.
