HAMPSTEAD – The Hampstead Middle School Jazz Band and Chamber Choir will be presenting their annual “Pops Concert” on March 26, but in a brand new format.
The Hampstead Music Boosters are planning the new presentation. For the first time, the annual evening Pops Concert will be in the form of a dinner show.
Band Director Jim Robins, Chorus Director Robert St. Cyr, and the Boosters said their idea is to bring a bit of a jazz club or cabaret ambiance to the evening. The HMS Jazz Band and Chamber Choir are both auditioned groups of sixth through eighth graders. Both groups have performed at regional festivals and have earned gold medal level ratings.
The Pops Concert is a fundraiser for the Hampstead Music Boosters, whose members approached the town’s restaurants and businesses seeking either monetary donations or a raffle or silent auction prize, or help with the dinner. The money raised will benefit not only the Jazz Band and Chamber Choir, but also the entire music department, which includes three concert bands and two choirs.
The event will take place Wednesday, March 26, at 6 p.m. in the Hampstead Middle School cafeteria. The dinner will be a buffet style, Italian themed meal catered by The English Muffin. The Chamber Choir and the HMS Jazz Band and Small Ensembles will perform during the meal.
Music Booster member Ann Berrigan said all proceeds from the event will go to benefit the HMS Music Boosters for music activities at the school. The cost of the meal is $8 per person, $6 per student, with a maximum charge of $20 per family.
The HMS Music Boosters provide scholarships to students participating in summer music programs, as well as paying other costs associated with the music program that are not covered in the school budget, such as competition and festival registration fees, professional accompanists, emergency repairs and equipment purchases.
Berrigan said the groups will perform while people are enjoying their meal and afterward.
