SANDOWN – Hans Nicolaisen was chosen to serve as chair of the board of selectmen this year. Jim Devine will take over as vice chair.
Nicolaisen served as chair during an earlier term on the board but most recently was vice chair.
The decision was made at the group’s March 24 meeting.
The group also made department liaison changes, as follows:
Nicolaisen stepped down from the planning board liaison spot to let newly elected Steve Brown take it on. Brown volunteered, but jokingly questioned why he had made that decision. Nicolaisen will take on the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Cable TV Advisory Board, the Senior Affairs Transportation Program and building inspector, code enforcement and the health officer.
Along with planning, Brown took the budget committee and finance.
Terry Treanor will handle the Old Home Days committee, recreation commission, highway and sanitation and police.
Devine took the town clerk/tax collector, the fire department and emergency management director, conservation commission, the currently dormant local energy commission and joint loss management.
Newly elected Cynthia Buco took the public library and the municipal records committee.
In other business:
• Brown noted his concern that the board voted last week to appoint Arthur Green to a vacant Timberlane Regional School District budget committee seat. While he did not have an issue with Green as the choice, he took issue with the way the process was handled.
Nicolaisen voted against the approval, saying he thought they should advertise for the spot and let other residents send in letters of intent. Both Devine and Treanor approved of the appointment.
Brown cited precedent that the selectmen typically gave residents the opportunity to send in letters of interest. He said he was surprised and disappointed at the decision.
Brown said Green may be the best person for the job but that other residents deserved a chance to apply. He added that there was not a big hurry to appoint a member of the committee, as budget season was over.
